Chapter 6
âAs the first blush of dawn peeled back the cover of night, Eliza stood transfixed by the window, watching as the horizon surrendered to the advance of day. There was a hushed reverence to the world outside, a pristine canvas upon which the sun began to paint its first golden strokes.
âBut inside, Elizaâs room thrummed with unsung tension, the air heavy with the secrets of the night before. The spell book lay open on her desk, the pages still whispering of power and possibilities now etched into the very fibres of her being.
âShe turned away from the breaking day, her silhouette a dark contrast against the warming glow, and moved about her room with a mechanical precision. Each movement was underscored by the silent chorus of her anticipation; with every heartbeat, she could feel the pull of what was to come â a symphony of vindication played in the key of retribution.
âThe spell had been cast, its incantation a haunting echo that had filled her room hours earlier. Now, with the new day dawning, Eliza was a vessel of contained expectancy, her thoughts caressing the edges of her desires like a loverâs touch.
ââYou're up early.â Came a voice from her doorway. It was her mother, her figure haloed by the light of the corridor.
âEliza turned, schooling her features into an expression of practised nonchalance.
ââCouldn't sleep.â She replied, her voice a melody of innocence that belied the crescendo of secrets it carried.
âHer mother walked in, a gentle smile curving her lips, ignorant to the storm brewing in her daughter's chest.
ââAre you sure you're alright?â She asked, laying a comforting hand on Eliza's shoulder.
âEliza met her mother's gaze, a flicker of the turmoil within flashing in the depths of her eyes before she quelled it.
ââI'm fine, Mom.â She reassured, her lie woven with the threads of a truth yet to unfold.
ââWell, breakfast is almost ready. Don't take too long.â Her mother advised before exiting the room, leaving Eliza alone once more with her anticipation.
âElizaâs gaze drifted to the spell book, and she felt a pull, a yearning to touch it once more, to confirm that its promises were not just the fabrications of a desperate heart. She approached it slowly, reverently, her fingers tracing the ancient cover before flipping it closed with a sense of finality.
âShe breathed deeply, the morning light now painting her features with a luminosity that seemed almost ethereal. But there was nothing angelic in the smouldering fire that danced behind her eyes. It was the glow of embers that promised an inferno.
âToday was indeed a big day. It was the day her tormentors would find themselves facing the very fears they had instilled in her. Today was the day she would watch as the world she knew acknowledged the dark corner where she had nurtured her newfound power.
âWith a last glance at the book, Eliza turned and walked toward the door, her steps as sure as the sunrise, her mind a whirlwind of dark petals ready to unfurl at the touch of the dayâs light.
